Don't use the paint on ones. They don't work. The results of the white strips won't last as long as a whitening kit made by a dentist though. It has to do some thing on the enamel if it is going to penetrate to whiten. Maybe only the more powerful dentist whitening techniques are the problem. I don't know anyone who tried them nor care to, let mother nature take care of them. I think once you start them it may be an ongoing process for the future.
