I have tried several teeth whitening products and services, but only one tooth whitener that actually works, and works well and gives great smile and is called "White American Idol" - As seen on CNN.com, MSNBC. com, USAToday. com and MSN.com. It is also the last of the famous secret to get your teeth whitened in just 3 easy steps. It cleans and whitens teeth, is a teeth whitening solution always final! Really works and I am happy and satisfied customer.

Get one that uses a gel - the strips are fine, but will take longer to do the job.

If you overdo tooth whitening you can do more damage than good, so be careful.

It is not possible to make teeth whiter than they are from nature's hand. Basically tooth whitening products work with two approaches. One type is based on peroxide or another bleaching agent which will bleach deposits on your teeth, but will not necessarily remove deposits. If you use this type way beyond what is recommended on the insert of the product, then you may irritate your gum and create other problems. The other type is based on a mild acid that will etch off deposits and a very thin layer of your enamel, so if you use this type excessively, then you may turn your tooth whitening kit into a tooth yellowing kit instead.

Your teeth are covered by white enamel, so when you clean/bleach the surface than you will get your teeth as close to their natural grade of white color as possible. However, under the enamel, the structural part of the tooth is made of dentin, which is a yellowish bone-like substance, so if you have a thinner than average layer of enamel from nature's hand, then your teeth will appear darker or more yellow than average. If you damage the enamel with excessive etching then the thinning of the enamel will make your teeth more yellow - which I assume is not your aim with the exercise.

When the tooth whitening manufacturers promise UP TO 4 or 5 shades whiter teeth, then it is cool calculated business because you will only get the maximum effect if you are a perfect candidate; above average thickness of enamel and coffee/smoke stained teeth before you start the treatment. In my opinion it is a very bad idea that tooth whitening kits can be purchased over the counter without professional guidance from a dentist, because a dentist will be able to tell you if you are a good candidate or if you, like me, have a thin layer of enamel to begin with and therefore will waste your money if you buy a tooth whitening kit.

Before you start a tooth whitening treatment you should always consult a dentist, because often he/she will recommend an extensive tooth cleaning instead which can make your teeth as white as they can be. By having your teeth polished and plaque removed you also prevent gingivitis (bleeding gum from a mild infection in the top of your tooth pockets) as there are less uneven surfaces that bacteria can hold on to. The tooth whitening manufacturers are happy that you can buy whitening kits without professional consultation, because - from their perspective - a dentist is a very poor reseller of whitening kits.

The best whitening kits are the Crest White strips (I've found with personal experience). Don't use the paint on ones. They don't work. The results of the white strips won't last as long as a whitening kit made by a dentist though. The professional kits are great if you have the money to spend and if your teeth are quite discoloured. If you just want to brighten your smile a bit then the white strips will be fine. It won't work if you have any fillings or crowns on your front teeth.

Don't leave them on for over the recommended time. You can over bleach. and nothing will be able to fix that. Also you can get very sensitive teeth.

Also whitening floss or gum.. doesn't work. its a money grab.

Box whitening kits from the store don't work no matter how many times you use them. All you are going to do is waste money and ruin your teeth. I got fitted trays from my dentist...but you can make your own with this kit (see link) easily and cheaply. I get this stuff from my dentist but you can get in on ebay. It really works amazing! I promise. Get the mint (i used 20% but it all depends on your teeth sensitivity) it comes in 15%, 20% and 35%

I have read tooth sensitivity and enamel damage can be a problem. It has to do some thing on the enamel if it is going to penetrate to whiten. Maybe only the more powerful dentist whitening techniques are the problem. I don't know anyone who tried them nor care to, let mother nature take care of them. I think once you start them it may be an ongoing process for the future.
